Cheese Fondue Battle

Yesterday I attended the 3rd Cheese Fondue Battle in the form of a juror. In case you haven’t noticed by reading this blog, this was exactly the right role for me. Not only to test different fondues but furthermore to rate them by taste and originality. What an exciting way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

The rooms and the garden of the Vienna Ballhaus provided the setting for this battle. The battle happened inside and for a breath of fresh air you stepped outside.

The five battle stations readied themselves for the onslaught of jurors and did comparatively a good job. The battle participants this year included:

-Käseland am Naschmarkt
-Jumi Langegasse
-Der Schweizer
-Roter Bär
-Käsehütte am Naschmarkt

All of them presented two kinds of cheese fondue. A classic version and a freestyle version. My overall favourite was Der Schweizer. Maybe I am a bit biased since I already had his fine fondue last summer, but to me it was the best. Also his freestyle version with caramelized onions was super delicious.

Also a winner was a the freestyle fondue from Yumi. They added kimchi and this was so surprising. Such a great combination, who would have thought.

Finally the most original presentation had the guys from Roter Bär. They came in with a red cow, dressed in Dirndl and their freestyle version came out of the udder.

Nonetheless the fondue was not up to par as was the same for the other participants. The event itself is fun though and I do hope that there will be another battle in 2021. Cheese fondue is such a lovely dish, especially in winter time. Yours, Pollybert

PS: I didn’t stay for the award ceremony. So the winners here are purely my opinion.
