Breakfast at Kaffee Kunze

One has to be really observant to notice Kaffee Kunze behind the huge construction wall for the new U5 metro. But once you know about this little coffee house it is hard to forget. Two weeks in a row I came here for breakfast and liked it so much that I already made another reservation.

The interior exudes a certain shabby chic, with crumbling walls and old furniture. At the same time it has a very cozy atmosphere and a warm ambience. As I said, I loved it so much that I returned the following week.

Coffee arrived promptly and tasted lovely, full-bodied and full of flavor. The beans come from a Berlin roasting facility called Andraschko, which fits in well with the overall German theme of the place. I would not have thought that this could work in Vienna, a city that proudly looks to its own coffee culture, but it definitely works here.

The avocado sourdough bread was delicious. I ordered it with an additional poached egg, which was nestled between two open faced slices of bread. There was a generous amount of avocado on the bread, nicely seasoned and overall a delight to eat. The bread itself tasted lovely with a good crust and soft interior, still having a great texture. Cress sprouts provided a hint of peppery spice.

The pancake with blueberries on the other hand was a bit strange. But maybe the Germans eat pancake that way. In Austria the batter is thin and soft, while in America it is thick and more cake like. Here it was something in between, thin but pillowy. Not at all the way I know it. There was also not much taste to it, as blueberries at this time of year do not have much flavor and in this size do not offer much taste to begin with. It was okay, but not something I would order again.

The almond croissant is made in house, at least that is what the menu promises. It looks rather home-made and was a bit on the dry side. It could have used more almonds or maybe some marzipan in the middle.

Kaffee Kunze has very friendly service and great coffee. The savory dish I tasted was absolutely fine, so maybe I will stick to that in the future. I loved the cozy atmosphere and that it is a rather small place, which makes it feel quite intimate. Definitely a place I would like to try in the evening as well for drinks. Yours, Pollybert
