Breakfast at Oko Wien – permanently closed

Asian breakfasts are a rarity in Vienna. So when I saw Oko Wien, I was all for trying something new. The menu offers Onzen eggs, a Japanese specialty. They are only available Fridays and Saturdays from 10am on while supply lasts, or after per-ordering. Of course we had breakfast at 9am, so no onzen eggs for me. At least the weather was still nice and we sat outside. The Alser Strasse is usually very busy, but due to a detour for the new metro line construction the street was almost empty.

Besides onzen eggs the menu offers all kinds of interesting dishes. Most of them are not really breakfast dishes as we know them, but that makes Oko Wien even more interesting. In the end I decided against eating fish for breakfast and ordered eggs Benedict. Maybe if it would have been a little bit later fish would have been fine. But that early in the morning I needed something more traditional with my coffee.

The eggs Benedict come, instead on a bun, on a bed of rice with home-made cured salmon, poached spinach, and a wasabi sauce Hollandaise.

I seasoned my eggs with soy sauce as recommended and actually quite liked the salmon, egg, and rice combination. Weirdly enough it was the sauce Hollandaise, which didn’t work for me. Not in a bad way, I just wouldn’t have needed it. The dish was tasty and filling, I didn’t need any lunch that day.

Personally I like a ‘weird’ breakfast. While traveling in Asia I prefer to eat soup or congee. So Oko Wien is right up my alley. Service was very friendly and quick, overall I had a very good experience here. Next time though, I will definitely be a little bit more adventurous and order something special. Yours, Pollybert
