AUX / Funky House

The former broadcasting studios of the ORF in the 4th district are now home to the newly opened AUX, a wine bar that also serves food. The studios had stood empty for quite some time, and there was plenty of discussion about their ‘afterlife’. The historical buildings have now found a new lease on life with amongst others AUX.

The wine bar is located in what used to be the audio tape archives, nowadays most people probably no longer even know what an audio tape is. That doesn’t matter when it comes to the new bar though. It is so new, in fact, that it was hard to find. We have been told though that a sign has already been ordered.

We had made a reservation for the evening, which turned out to be unnecessary because apparently no one has heard about this place yet. I have a feeling though that will change very soon. Most of the evening we were alone, literally alone, as even the staff left the premises for a smoke outside. Nonetheless, the service was attentive and very friendly whenever they were around.

The menu was handwritten on a large blackboard near the entrance, with only a few dishes available. We ordered all the starters: bread, olives, two kinds of fish, meat, and cheese. Most of the dishes were of Spanish origin and, according to our host, imported by a friend of his. Totally believable, because the quality was outstanding.

The raw milk Manchego had a sharp bite at the back and worked beautifully with the thinly sliced, perfectly ripe pear. The anchovies in vinegar came with a hot mustard, while the anchovies on toast had a lovely, almost sweet taste. Delicious Serrano ham and chorizo together with caper berries made up the meat plate. The olives had such a great flavor that I sucked each one dry of its flesh. Butter was on the house and, thankfully, not whipped. Together with the bread it was the perfect addition to taste our way through everything. The bread didn’t come from a fancy bakery, but from one of the markets around.

Of course, my friend wanted to try one of the main dishes as well, even though we were already quite full. Thankfully it was possible to order a smaller portion of the kimchi spaetzle. Mixed with walnuts and drizzled with lemon sour cream, the spaetzle disappeared in no time. Definitely a new favorite dish.

The place had a very relaxed vibe and the music was great. It was actually fun to experience it all by ourselves, although I do hope AUX will be successful. I liked my wine and the Hirter beer on draft was also a hit. AUX is a very fun place and I would love to come again. Yours, Pollybert
