Breakfast at Makom – update

It had been a while since I last had breakfast at Makom, so it was all the more welcome to start the day with some non Austrian food. There are quite a few restaurants in Vienna that serve delicious Middle Eastern cuisine, but none that I know of offer such interesting dishes in the morning.

Early on this Saturday morning we had Makom to ourselves, at least for a little while.

Coffee arrived quickly, along with a pomegranate lemonade that had a surprisingly interesting taste. It was not too sweet and had a slight sour note. Very refreshing and I can easily see myself drinking it in summer while sitting on the terrace outside.

Makom offers a good number of tempting breakfast dishes, but that morning I was in the mood for a pastrami sandwich. It came on sourdough bread, thickly smeared with house made hummus, salty pickles, and honey mustard sauce. As much as I liked the pastrami, there could have been more of it. Thinking about it now, less honey mustard sauce would also have been better, as it was a bit too sweet for my taste. Overall though, the combination worked very well. I especially enjoyed the bread, which had a marvelous crust.

My friend ordered Ari’s Sabich, a mix of baked eggplant, house made hummus, Israeli salad, tahini, and organic eggs on house made pita bread. The pita was rather firm but provided an excellent base for the toppings. There was plenty of tahini sauce, which soaked into the bread nicely. The falafel was an extra and consisted of just one piece cut in half, but it was delicious and my friend wished there had been more. He was finally happy after our recent breakfast disappointments. A truly wonderful dish, perfectly balanced in both flavors and textures.

If you are looking for something out of the ordinary for breakfast, look no further. Makom offers delicious breakfast dishes and very friendly service. I really enjoyed my meal and will make sure to return again soon. Yours, Pollybert
