The last time I sat down in a Ströck Feierabend was exactly seven years ago. Back then, the bakery chain had only one Feierabend location, at Landstraße. My impression was one of a mix of hits and misses, but I clearly remember loving the onsen eggs with the Mornay sauce. So after a long absence, it felt like the right time for a return visit, but at one of their newer locations.
The bakery has a small terrace on Neubaugasse, which is at least preferable to the busier Burggasse. At this hour, the terrace was still in the shade and completely empty. Still, I was not entirely convinced I wanted to sit there, as the traffic in the area can be quite heavy.

Inside, however, I was immediately impressed. The space feels open and airy, with high ceilings and a large floral wallpaper at the back. I especially liked how the motif is repeated on the menu, a small detail that works surprisingly well.

Although the waiter was working alone, my coffee arrived quickly, especially since my friend had already been served.

Unlike the location in the third district, this Ströck Feierabend was not packed at 9 am. People in this neighborhood clearly prefer to sleep in.

IInstead of my usual eggs Benedict, I ordered a breakfast sando with extra bacon, while my friend went for the eggs. That way I could still try them and give my approval. When the food arrived, I liked the presentation, though I could immediately see my friend’s enthusiasm fade. The green stuff on top did not appeal to him at all.

The eggs Benedict are still made with onsen eggs, served with ham, spinach, and sauce Hollandaise on shokupan, a Japanese milk bread. Personally, I enjoy the spinach and ham combination and appreciate that it comes as a built in mix of eggs Benedict and Florentine. Looking closer, my friend’s skepticism made sense. There was not much ham. One slice covered the eggs, but underneath it was mostly spinach. This is definitely not a meat lover’s version. For him, it was fine overall, except for the milk bread, which was not toasted and felt a bit dry despite the wobbly eggs. The Hollandaise, however, was clearly homemade and had a pleasant acidic note. I suspect I would have enjoyed the eggs Benedict more than he did.
What I did love without hesitation was my breakfast sando. It came filled with pea guacamole, salad, grilled peppers, a folded omelette, and, thanks to my addition, extra bacon. That was a very good decision, as it added both crunch and depth of flavor. A small bowl of pea guacamole was served on the side, and I ended up finishing all of it with the sandwich. It is quite a large portion, so if you are not particularly hungry, it is easy to share. In the end, I gave a quarter of it to my friend.

Breakfast sando @Ströck Feierabend – Burggasse
Ströck Feierabend – Burggasse manages to escape the typical bakery chain atmosphere and instead creates a genuinely comfortable breakfast experience. I liked both the service and the food, and especially the fact that the menu still manages to surprise. A breakfast burger is easy to find in Vienna, but a breakfast sando is not. This is a place I will gladly return to. Yours, Pollybert
