It was a beautiful Saturday morning when we sat down on the terrace of Plain. The restaurant is right at the corner of the Servitengasse and therefore right in the middle of the Servitenviertel. The area is quiet depite the tram passing through the next street, but there is not a lot of traffic. What better place than here to stop for breakfast and enjoy it outside.

The terrace was completely empty at 9am, the one occupied table in the picture belonged to La Mercerie next door. But Plain does not come in second behind the French bistro, rather they complement each other with their distinct menus. When we left an hour later, Plain was busy and most tables were occupied. So it is probably wise to make a reservation.
Coffee and juice showed up within a couple of minutes and the lone server had already taken our order for the food as well. She was nothing if not efficient.

My friend ordered Royal Eggs, which consisted of three organic eggs either scrambled or fried, smoked salmon or ham from Thum, grilled cherry tomatoes, fresh herbs, and toasted organic Joseph Brot. He got the eggs fried and ordered his meal with ham and all in all he was quite happy with everything although the ham portion was ever so small. The bread had only been lightly toasted and personally I love my fried eggs less wobbly. In my opinion egg white should always be firm, but it did look enticing and my friend had no complaints.

Eggs Benedict at Plain are called Poached Eggs on Joseph Brot and come on one slice of toasted organic Joseph Brot, with tomato pesto, two poached organic eggs, pumpkin seeds, sauce Hollandaise, sweet potato chips, fresh herbs, lemon salt, olive oil, and chia seeds. There was not a lot of sauce Hollandaise, but I tried it first and it tasted homemade, which was already a good sign. I do not know if any chia seeds found their way into the dish, but I cannot say that I had noticed any.

There was not a lot of ham, looks definitely deceive here, as it was cut really thin and then just spread over a lot of room. The topping of the bread was mainly vegetables, there was a lot of fresh red cabbage underneath it all. The two eggs were small but perfectly cooked. The red pesto was spread thinly so as not to overpower the dish. Overall it was really tasty, albeit with a lot more vegetables than I had expected. Since there was not enough sauce, I needed to salt the eggs, something I usually do not need to do with an eggs Benedict combination. But maybe that is why this dish is only called poached eggs. What pleasantly surprised me were the sweet potato chips, which were freshly made and added a nice crunch to the meal.
All in all breakfast at Plain was a really lovely experience. The food was good, the quality excellent, and it was definitely homemade. Service was quick until the place started to fill up. The lone waitress was busy taking care of everything, so getting to settle the bill took a while. I am not really sure why it took me so long to come here, but the next time will come a lot sooner.
