Tante Liesl

The restaurant Tante Liesl has a prominent place next to the Servitenkirche. Especially its garden, which extends onto the square in front of the church, is in summer a wonderful treat. A large tree provides natural shade, although the terrace is also equipped with sunshades.

It is wonderful to see that finally a restaurant at this location is here to stay for a while. Quite a couple of different concepts failed to draw enough diners beyond a first visit. Tante Liesl though has already managed to bring me back a second time. On a recent Sunday we sat down inside to enjoy our meal.

We chose some of the best-known dishes Viennese cuisine has to offer and ordered Wiener Backhendl, Grammelknödel, and Tafelspitz. With dishes like these it should be easy to tell whether a restaurant knows a thing or two about Viennese food and, to be honest, I was very pleased with our choice.

The fried deboned chicken leg arrived with green salad instead of the usual potato salad, a nod to constant dieting. The chicken was juicy, as befits darker meat, but the buttermilk marinade had also made it especially tender. It was devoured with gusto and there was only praise heard from this corner.

The Grammelknödel, dumplings filled with crackling, are nothing I would ever order myself. But there are people who truly enjoy this dish when it is done right. To be honest, it did look tasty, with the glossy dumplings nestling right next to the sauerkraut in plenty of pork roast gravy. This dish as well received only great remarks and, except for one rather large and hard crackling, was sublime.

The Tafelspitz belonged to me. A piece of boiled beef might not be to everyone’s liking, but as a Viennese I do love it. It is typically served with shredded roasted potatoes, creamy spinach, apple horseradish sauce, and chive sauce. If done right, there is nothing better in my opinion when it comes to Austrian cuisine. And Tante Liesl got the job done. This was indeed a very tasty meal.

The meat was juicy and tender and came with a generous amount of potatoes. The potatoes were excellent; so often they are simply greasy and with hardly any color. Not at Tante Liesl though. The creamy spinach had plenty of flavor, as did the sauces. Although it was quite a large portion, I finished it all.

There was no room left for dessert, nonetheless we ordered one to share. The Panna Cotta unfortunately fell flat. It was far too dense and lacked the usual silky smoothness one expects from it. At least the strawberries had an intense flavor.

I am glad we had a reservation, as the restaurant tends to fill up quickly. Apparently I am not the only one who appreciates the kitchen at Tante Liesl. If you are looking for good Viennese food, this is a great choice: unpretentious, friendly service, and very good food. I will definitely be back. Yours, Pollybert
