Breakfast at Drechsler Wienzeile – update

On a recent weekend I managed a breakfast on both days. Since Saturday was rather disappointing, we got a reservation at Drechsler Wienzeile for Sunday. Drechsler is usually a sure-fire breakfast spot with delicious eggs Benedict and avocado smash toasts. Maybe I was still a bit tired from the evening before (a visit to the Hausbar always tends to end late) or maybe I was just hungover, but I got a bit annoyed.

I had made a written reservation and asked for a table outside since we had a smoker with us. There was one table available on the terrace when I arrived but the waitress showed me a table all the way to the back inside. When I asked for the table outside, I was told it was reserved. After insisting that I had also a reservation, plus asked for a table outside, we ended up outside. Once coffee and mini Gin Tonic arrived I felt a lot better.

We ordered Eggs Benedict and Eggs Florentine and asked for one each. That’s our usual request, sometimes the kitchen declines to do that, sometimes they agree but don’t manage it. This time we were told it wouldn’t be a problem, only to receive two plates of Eggs Benedict with extra baby mangold on the side of one plate. Whatever.

Last time I was here the eggs Benedict came with a saffron Hollandaise and a truffle mayonnaise. The truffle mayo was unfortunate, but Hollandaise quite good. So it was a bit of a surprise that now the restaurant offers its eggs with a brown butter Hollandaise. I can’t say that there was any nutty taste to the sauce, nor was there enough acidity. It was just a buttery yellow sauce which lacked distinct taste. The cheese curd toast was in my opinion too thick and a bit dry, and there was actually too much ham underneath the eggs. Can’t believe I complain of that, but it just didn’t work.

Honestly, it was slightly underwhelming which is really too bad. Especially since I love the mini Gin Tonic here. The whole menu got an overhaul and the spicy avocado egg is a thing of the past. I will probably need some time to digest all this before I decide on a return visit. The service was quick and checked if you had your Covid related papers. Yours, Pollybert
