705 Coffee got its name from what the owners consider the perfect time for coffee, namely 7:05 am. Not that the place is open at this hour, but apparently this is when the three owners drink their coffee at home. We arrived at 9 am instead, which is a perfectly reasonable time for coffee as well.
There is a strict no reservation policy in place, a refreshing change from most breakfast spots around town. As 705 Coffee sits directly opposite the anatomy department of the University of Vienna, I was fairly confident that getting a table would not be an issue. Students, as I know from my own experience, are rarely early birds.

The coffeehouse is located on a busy street with heavy traffic, tram tracks, and a distinct lack of parking spaces. Despite a few tables outside, there can hardly be any relaxed terrace seating. Not that it really matters. 705 Coffee seems to cater mainly to students for take away and a handful of tourists from the nearby hotel. None of them showed up particularly on this early Saturday.

The menu looked promising, offering several sweet bowls, egg dishes such as shakshuka and Turkish eggs, as well as eggs Benedict. As I had not eaten eggs Benedict in quite a while, I felt like giving them a go. With only dinner planned for the day, something hearty seemed like a good idea. The coffee arrived promptly and was excellent, full of flavor with a nice crema despite being a full cup. I even wondered whether the Americano here might be made with a double espresso.

My friend ordered the Mediterranean omelette with olives, feta, and dried tomatoes and received his breakfast a few minutes before me. I am not sure why the kitchen did not manage to serve both dishes at the same time, but it was not a major issue. The omelette looked decent, although it seemed to have stuck to the pan. It came with toasted sourdough bread and there were no complaints from my vis a vis. There were also no cries of ecstasy. According to him it was neither the worst nor the best. Personally, I think the balsamic glaze on the limp arugula garnish should have been banned decades ago.

When my eggs Benedict finally made their way out of the kitchen, my friend was already halfway through his meal. The dish looked appealing at first glance, especially the nicely fried bacon and the generous helping of sauce Hollandaise. Unfortunately, the color of the sauce immediately reminded me of the ready made Thomy product.

My suspicion was confirmed with the first bite. The sauce was clearly some kind of ready made product and, even worse, it had not been heated. The result was a plate with really well fried bacon, perfectly poached eggs, an English muffin that was slightly too thick, too sweet, and not toasted enough, and far too much cold sauce. I tried scraping the sauce off the eggs and ended up enjoying them mostly with the bacon. The muffin was not my thing at all, as the sweetness was too dominant. The limp arugula with the balsamic glaze made yet another unwelcome appearance and did nothing to improve the overall impression.
In conclusion, these were the worst eggs Benedict I have eaten in quite a while. While 705 Coffee serves very good coffee, the breakfast unfortunately missed the mark. Good enough for takeaway coffee, but I would not return for food. Yours, Pollybert
