Tisch & Matte

On one of the last warm summer days, I ventured over the bridge into the 20th district to have dinner at Tisch & Matte. Yes, you read that correctly, the premises are a mix between a yoga studio and a restaurant.

On this evening, it wasn’t that evident, as the yoga area is in the back room and we sat outside on the terrace. It lies on a residential street, so traffic is minimal and it is lovely to sit there at the rough benches and tables.

The menu is relatively short, with a handful of starters, a few more main dishes, and two desserts. There are some vegan and vegetarian dishes on the menu as well. The wine all comes from the same producer, and there is a house wine available, as well as some better ones by the bottle. Funnily enough, the white house wine, a Grüner Veltliner, tasted much better than the more expensive bottled one.

I started my meal with marinated kohlrabi with radish and king oyster mushrooms. This vegan dish surprised me with its complexity and depth. First of all, the colours were already lovely and enticed me to dig in. It had a real summer look.

The yoghurt-like creamy sauce had a nice level of acidity and worked beautifully with the kohlrabi. There could have been more of the fried warm mushrooms, as they provided some nice texture and were particularly tasty. The kohlrabi and radish were the definite stars of the show with their lightly fermented taste. I loved it and only noticed later that it was a vegan dish.

For the main course, I ordered Zwiebelrostbraten, which is usually a thick slice of roast beef topped with lots of fried onions and served with plenty of gravy, roasted potatoes and a pickle on the side. When my plate arrived, it looked exactly as I had imagined it.

Unfortunately, I found that the meat, albeit tender, was a bit bland. It was also too thin and not of the quality I would have preferred. To be fair, though, considering the price, I had expected as much, so I got what I paid for. Otherwise, it was really tasty. The gravy had a wonderful flavour and I loved the crunchy onions. The potatoes could have stayed a bit longer in the pan, but overall it was a nice enough dish.

We ordered apricot dumplings and lemon tarte for dessert, and the tarte was attacked as soon as it arrived, as were the dumplings. The potato dough of the dumplings was appreciated by the fraction of those in favour, while I prefer my fruit dumplings with curd dough. The lemon tarte was amazing and turned out to be vegan as well.

This was definitely an evening full of nice surprises, with two vegan dishes that I enjoyed wholeheartedly. I am happy to say that Tisch & Matte is in the neighbourhood, so I can always pop by for a meal. Yours, Pollybert
