Breakfast at GOTA Coffee Experts

GOTA Coffee Experts has been around for quite a while, because I remember coming here for coffee years ago. I am not really sure what I was doing in this area, as it is far from my usual haunts, but I do remember stopping by for coffee and cake. Already back then I thought this could be a nice breakfast spot to try.

Last weekend I finally had the chance to do so and noticed that the coffeeshop has moved. It is no longer on the corner, but rather two doors down. Which is quite fabulous, because now there is enough space in front of the door for some terrace seating.

I had made a reservation for breakfast, which turned out to be a wise decision, as GOTA Coffee Experts was busy. Probably because there is not much else around, except for the excellent Die Speis. GOTA Coffee Experts operates with 90 minute time slots. Since there is a constant stream of people coming and going, the turnover rate is high and the limited time makes sense. But you do not want to come here for a long, relaxed brunch to catch up with friends.

We ordered our breakfast and coffee soon after arriving. The coffeeshop has quite a large staff on hand, so there is one person taking the order, another bringing it, and a third settling the bill. Which unfortunately also results in dishes being placed in front of the wrong person. Consistently.

For all the advertised expertise in coffee, I liked it but did not love it. It must have been Arabica beans, as there was a slight acidity to it. Not too overwhelming, but also not great.

I was in the mood for eggs Benedict, and at GOTA Coffee Experts they are served on a Wachauer, hence the name. Poached eggs with ham, sauce Hollandaise, and some horseradish. I was intrigued, as horseradish with eggs Benedict sounded interesting, to say the least. I was not sure if it would work, but I was willing to try.

It definitely looked pleasing to the eye. Very uniform and dainty. The Wachauer had a slight colour, so it appeared to be toasted. Only the colour of the sauce Hollandaise did not look right to me. More like the store bought version of this buttery sauce than a homemade one. One taste and confirmation from the kitchen was no longer needed. It was rather cool on the lips, not even properly warmed. The eggs had not been freshly poached, but rather boiled and peeled in advance, and were unfortunately also not warm. This turned out to be a rather lukewarm affair. The horseradish, lightly sprinkled over the eggs, had lost all its flavour. Although I do question whether there was any to begin with, or if the sauce Hollandaise simply blanked out every other flavour in this tsunami of bad taste. Yes, that was a hard miss.

My friend tried his luck with the shakshuka, which was unfortunately also a complete failure. Listed as a dish with tomatoes, peppers, poached eggs, spices, feta, and bread, what arrived was a thick tomato soup with boiled eggs and sprinkled feta, alongside two pieces of sunflower seed roll. This had even less to do with shakshuka than the Wachauer dish had to do with eggs Benedict. I am not really sure what is going on here, but despite its open kitchen policy, there seem to be no chefs at work.

I had really high hopes for this, but GOTA Coffee Experts did not deliver. Since I do not live in the area, I can endure one breakfast gone haywire. Hopefully next week I will be blown away. Just come for coffee if you need to stop here. Yours, Pollybert
