Who doesn’t like eggs Benedict? Eggs Benedict are one of my favorite breakfast staple and I have been looking for the best places in Vienna since a long time. Finding the best eggs Benedict in Vienna is an ongoing journey, with many new breakfast places opening while others close. I am doing my best to find to tastiest spot for you, but so far I am still undecided. Yours, Pollybert
Café Schwarzenberg: This traditional Viennese coffeehouse offers three kinds of eggs Benedict. The original version, the spinach version called Florentine, or Royal with smoked salmon. All versions though come with only one egg and the sauce Hollandaise definitely arrives already prepared in the kitchen. The eggs Benedict we tasted looked more like a vegetarian version with avocado, a salad leaf, and red pepper, Funnily enough the red pepper left the strongest taste and overpowered everything else.

Bistro Fantasy: The eggs Benedict here sit on sourdaugh bread with wilted spinach and ham. If you want to go vegetarian, there is an eggplant version, or you can even do Royal eggs with smoked salmon. The standard version looks quite stunning, it is a nice portion with a lot of sauce Hollandaise, which is obviously home-made. The eggs unfortunately are not runny, which creates a problem with the slightly too acidic sauce then. Usually the sauce and the runny yolk mix to create the perfect harmony. No so here. Better luck next time comes to mind! Lots of points for the effort though!

705 Coffee: Despite the inviting look these eggs Benedict were among the worst I have ever eaten. The eggs were served on English muffin, or something similar, with crunchy bacon and lots of sauce Hollandaise. The dish had two problems. One, the muffin was too sweet and also too thick. It would have been better to cut it in half and toast it a little bit more. Second, the sauce was definitely the package kind and had not even been heated. Unfortunately the whole thing was quite disgusting.

GOTA Coffee Experts: Eggs Benedict at GOTA Coffee Experts are called Wachauer, named after the bread roll the eggs are served on. The bread was good, I have to concede the cofee house that, but the rest was rather mediocre to say the least. The eggs were boiled and not poached and had been kept lukewarm for a while. The sauce Hollandaise was the ready-made version as you can clearly see in the picture, and it was not warmed either. The horseradish on top added a nice touch to the presentation, but didn’t get through in taste. I guess the sauce overwhelmed anything else.

Ströck Feierabend – Burggasse: The eggs Benedict are completely hidden beneath the one slice of ham that this dish comes with. Here the eggs are onsen eggs, therefore slightly wobblier and are laid on a slice of Japanese milkbread. Topped with lots of spinach, the one slice of ham, and then a mix of greens the eggs Benedict at Ströck Feierabend – Burggasse would count as healthy meal in my book. The sauce Hollandaise tasted certainly homemade, slightly too acidic on its own, and therefore great in combination with the soft eggs.

Plain: Altough the eggs at plain are only called poached eggs I have decided to put the dish in the eggs Benedict list as they are served with sauce Hollandaise. It is true, there is not a lot of sauce, but what there is seems to be homemade. That is already a lot better than at other breakfast places around the city. Two poached eggs nestle on a slice of toasted Joseph Brot, with red pesto underneath. There is not too much of it to keep the balance just right. Then there is a lot of vegetables like red cabbage and fresh spinach topped with the eggs, some sauce Hollandaise, and a generous sprinkling of sweet potato chips. It is an interesting combination and very tasty. The ham from Thum or smoked salmon has to be ordered extra.
